There's a good chance that you have mixed feelings about blogging for money, it's common for some people to think it might be evil, lame or obnoxious or anything like that then the answer is simply don't commercialise it.
But if monetizing your blog doesn't offend your sensibilities then go for it, on the other hand if you think it's evil, then that's fine too.
But you must seriously make up your mind before you start, because making money in this way is difficult enough without self-sabotage kicking in and making your attempt somewhat half-hearted.
It should feel pretty good making some money from your blog, there's nothing wrong about having a healthy need to succeed.
If in your opinion your blog has real value, then you deserve to earn something from it.
But you can't be shy about the whole thing, if you want to put in some ads, then really put those ads in there it has to be the same with requesting donations, don't be shy.
There are always some who will complain when you commercialise a free site, they always do.
Is it possible to make a proper income online? Without a doubt. It will take longer if you have a day job but the opportunities exist.
